There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding hypnotherapy. I'm going to cover five of my favourites however, if you would like to know about any that I haven't covered, please do get in touch.
1. Hypnotherapy is magic or the work of the Devil
This has to be my all time favourite! Despite what many think, Hypnotherapists do not have a cupboard full of dolls and pins, nor do we have a magic wand. I am not a Voodoo master, satanist, magician or witch (although I wouldn't mind a broomstick to fly on)!
We actually spend the majority of our day in an alpha state, which is the same state I take you too in order for beneficial suggestions to be spoken directly to your subconscious mind. I was not born a hypnotherapist, it is something I've studied long and hard to learn in order to help people for their own benefit.
2. Are you going to make me cluck like a chicken?
No I will not! I have been trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy not Stage Hypnosis and there is a huge difference between the two. Stage Hypnotism is for the benefit of making people laugh, and whilst it can be amusing, it has hampered the role of Clinical Hypnotherapy massively.
The most that I would ever ask anyone to do in a hypnotherapy session would be to lift a finger, be that for yes or no, sometimes to make sure that you have not drifted off to sleep.
3. The Therapist will be in control of my mind
Erm no! The only person in control of your mind is you. You are in control of the session at all times throughout the hypnotherapy process and you will only accept suggestions that are beneficial to you, a line that I place in all of my sessions.
You can bring yourself out of hypnosis any time you feel it necessary (no one in the history of my clients has ever felt the necessity to do this).
4. I might get stuck in hypnosis
You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, you are in a state of hyper-awareness therefore very safe. You may relax very deeply, and if when counted out you don't come back straight away, you will just come too naturally as if you had woken.
Again this has never happened to any of my clients.
5. There is no truth that Hypnotherapy works
This is likely the most untrue statement of all. The effectiveness of hypnotherapy has been proven time and time again. Many medical and scientific organsations have independently endorsed hypnotherapy as a valid form of treatment.
If you would like me to supply you with a list, please let me know and I will be happy to do so.
I hope that the above resolves your worries. If you have been privy to any other myths or misconceptions, I'd love to hear from you.
Being that it is International Women’s Day, I thought I would do a little blog about me.
My life has changed so much over the last 12 years, and it just gets better and better! I’ve been constantly learning new skills. Setting myself new challenges, I now have a true belief and love for myself; I get out of my comfort zone regularly, and follow my dreams as opposed to following what others would expect.
I’ve worked hard all of my life for other people, and I’ve really enjoyed every experience however, setting up on my own, pushing myself to be the best version of me that I can possibly be has been the greatest decision I have ever made. Not only do I get to use all of my skills, but I also get to help others on a daily basis and seeing them transform their lives for the better is priceless!
What changed all those years ago? I simply made a decision to remove toxicity and negativity from my life and I replaced it with passion and positivity. I’ve learned to change my thoughts and instead of moaning and whining about things I cannot control, I flip it 180° and turn it into a positive. For instance, I don’t like washing the pots (who does?), so now when I’m doing them, I’m grateful for the food that has been on the plates to feed my family. It really is as simple as changing your thoughts, as one of my great friends always says “thoughts become things Nicola!”
I couldn’t have done any of it without the love and support from my beautiful and amazing family, wonderful friends, the best teacher anyone could ever wish to have, and a truly meaningful, appreciative, and unconditional loving relationship with my partner.
I am eternally grateful for everything in my life and this is what has helped me to move out of the darkness and into the light. Thank you to all of you who have been involved in making my life a positive and passionate one!
I am going to make the rest of my life the best of my life! Bring it on!! Who’s with me?
Happy International Women’s Day 😊
